The Spider Witches
“Spinnevrouwtjes”
Somewhere deep in the Forest, where the moon always shines softly through the branches and the dew glitters like stardust, lives the Spider Witches—tiny spider women with sparkling eyes and long hair as fine as silver thread. They weave dreams for the humans with their magic webs. Every night they climb high into the trees and stretched their silk between the branches like a harp. Then they ssing soft spells: “Web of moonlight, soft and fine, bring sweet dreams, big and small.” ( “Web van maanlicht, zacht en fijn, breng zoete dromen, groot en klein.” )
They weave their webs around the mist and dewdrops, singing: “Thread of hope and light and strength, disappear, oh mist, from this night. (“Draad van hoop en licht en kracht, verdwijn, o mist, uit deze nacht.)
The moon will shine brighter for a moment and everywhere in the world soft dreams glide down like glittering white satin moths. If you look closely at the web by your window—one that suddenly twinkled in the moonlight … you might have been visited by a spider witch….

They live in the whimsical borderlands, where Land and Water meet. The tiniest creatures you almost never encounter.
You find them in marshy waters, hidden in muddy ditches and
among pollard willows. In the dark forests, in the stones,
under mushrooms and under the roots of old trees.
They are no bigger than a beetle, sometimes as small as
a mosquito. Invisible to most humans.
These are the creatures I encounter on my wanderings
and capture in watercolor…
